Vergelegen, a beacon of South African viticulture with a storied 324-year history, has announced a comprehensive rebranding of its wine portfolio. The estate, renowned for its blend of rich heritage and modern practices, has reduced its wine offerings from 17 to 10 in a bid to refine its brand and enhance its global appeal.
The rebranding initiative, a culmination of three years of meticulous planning and collaboration, sees Vergelegen unveiling a series of new wine labels designed to better communicate the estate’s storied legacy and commitment to sustainability.
The revised portfolio includes:
- Heritage range: Featuring Florence Rosé, Wild Winds Sauvignon Blanc, and the Mill Race Red Blend (reintroduced after a decade). Priced between R150 and R180 per bottle, this range focuses on accessible, versatile styles that embody the estate’s warm hospitality.
- Reserve range: This collection, which includes Cap Classique, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon, is priced from R330 to R400 per bottle. These medium- to full-bodied wines highlight Vergelegen’s rich history and craftsmanship, with illustrations of the estate’s iconic front gates.
- Estate range: Comprising Estate White and Estate Red (formerly G.V.B. White and Red), priced at R375 and R550 respectively. These flagship wines are crafted from select vineyard blocks and showcase the estate’s beautiful manor house and camphor trees on their labels.
- Icon: The V, available by allocation only and priced at R2 000 per bottle. This limited-edition wine is produced from exceptional vintages and will be released annually on 1 April, starting in 2025.
Design and sustainability
The label redesign, the first in several decades, draws inspiration from Vergelegen’s rich history and natural beauty. Illustrators Linda Smal and Rohan Etsebeth have captured elements such as the restored manor house, camphor trees, and the Octagonal Garden. The new labels, which have softened the estate’s traditional octagonal shape, reflect Vergelegen’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and biodiversity.
Vergelegen’s dedication to environmental stewardship is evident through its extensive alien vegetation clearing project, self-sufficient water supply, solar-powered facilities, and annual planting of 1 000 trees.
The Heritage and Estate ranges are also vegan-friendly and printed on 100% recycled paper, with fully recyclable packaging.
Vergelegen managing director Wayne Coetzer emphasised the dual focus of the rebranding effort: to strengthen local and international market positioning. The estate has sought guidance from multinational stakeholders and international market intelligence to ensure the rebranding meets the evolving tastes of wine consumers worldwide.
“The intention is to optimally portray this remarkable estate and appeal to both established and new wine lovers,” says Coetzer. “These updates reflect Vergelegen’s legendary status and our commitment to conserving this special estate for future generations.”
The newly packaged wines are now available for purchase through Vergelegen’s online shop and at the estate’s tasting room. For more information, visit www.vergelegen.co.za or email winetasting@vergelegen.co.za.
