When former president Nelson Mandela announced 25 years ago that South Africans should use the day of 24 September to celebrate our heritage, it was meant to remind each one of us where we come from and what was left to us by our ancestors – our various cultures, our history as well as the agricultural and every other sector that made us the nation and the people that we are.
Before long Heritage Day became Braai Day and families and friend started using this day to gather around a braai.
