Rise and shine Mzansi, another busy day unfolds in the agricultural sector.

On our radar today, working professionals with passion for policy making have until 30 November to submit their applications to the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) to join their post-graduate diploma programme.

The Gordon Institute of Business Science (GIBS) and Corteva Agriscience have opened applications for a 12-month women in agriculture empowerment programme; and we unpack the current state of the wine industry with Vinpro managing director, Rico Basson on Wednesday.

It’s Monday and we have a new edition of the Mzansi Flavour Digest in your inbox by 12:00. Stay tuned.

Calling all graduates and starved minds

Applications for postgraduate diploma at the Institute for Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) are open.

Undergrads and post-graduate students have until 30 November to apply.

The Postgraduate Diploma in PLAAS is a unique programme offered by the institute at the University of the Western Cape and is the only programme in the land and agrarian studies field offered at a South African university.

The PG Diploma is designed for passionate and committed working professionals such as policymakers, planners, managers and fieldworkers. It will benefit those working in government departments, local government bodies, NGOs, private sector companies and consultancies.

Applicants should have an undergraduate degree, with an average of 60% in the final assessment of the exit-modules in relevant courses such as sociology, history, economics, political science, agriculture, public administration, geography and/or environmental studies, together with at least three years’ relevant experience in the areas of poverty, land reform and sustainable natural resources management.

For those applicants without a first degree, recognition of prior learning (RPL) procedures will apply to candidates with extensive work experience of at least ten years in land and agrarian reform, rural development, natural resources management and gender issues. Preference will be given to students with good English writing abilities.

Interested students may apply here or send queries to postgraduates@plaas.org.za by 30 November 2020.

Candidates have two months to fill applications here.

  • You are a minimum age of 18;
  • Have been in business for no less than a year;
  • Are actively involved in the agricultural sector and its sub-sectors;
  • Employ at least one or more persons;
  • Achieve an annual total sales revenue of R200 000 in one year;
  • Business must show growth potential;
  • Must have at least a matric, but this may be assessed on a case-by-case basis;
  • English language proficiency;

    The current state of the wine industry

Wine producers, farmers and enthusiasts have until 16:00 on 3 November to secure a seat with the agribusiness portfolio committee in the Cape chamber of commerce virtual meeting on Wednesday.

The meeting is expected to take place at the Diemersfontein Wine estate in Wellington and will be streamed live on Zoom for those who are interested in attending virtually.

The committee will unpack strategies set to help the wine sector recover from the devastation caused by covid-19 disruptions as well and address transformation in the wine sector.

Keynote speakers include managing director of Vinpro, Rico Basson, and Wendy Petersen, transformation operations manager at the SA wine industry transformation unit.

The committee is committed to contributing to the development and empowerment of the agribusiness sector and driving economic development and job creation through a platform that aims to engage on matters relating to the role of the private sector in the broader agribusiness sector in the Western Cape.

Click here to secure your seat before 3 November 2020, at 16:00.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 12 global awards in the first three years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
