The award-winning celebrity chef and television personality Lorna Maseko is set to return for a second season of Homegrown Tastes South Africa. In the popular DStv show she discovers unique homegrown cuisine, including urban street food.
BBC Studios says the show will, again, be on BBC Lifestyle on channel 174. Filming begins in December this year with the exact 2023 launch date to be announced at a later stage. The show is produced by Rapid Blue.
In the first series, Maseko met a feast of local faces – from celebrities such as Pearl Modiadie and Khaya Mthethwa to Mzansi’s top chefs, producers and restaurant owners. Audiences were inspired as she prepared her own delicious interpretation using the hero ingredients from each episode.
Rapid Blue managing director Ziyanda Ngcaba says, “We’re thrilled that the first season of Homegrown Tastes South Africa received such a positive response from BBC Lifestyle viewers. Having been awarded a second season, we can’t wait to cook up more deliciousness and showcase the wonders of South Africa. It’s amazing to work with the talented Lorna Maseko again – she really is the heart that brings the series to life.”
Maseko adds, “To celebrate South Africa’s incredible produce and the people behind the magic is what makes this show so special. The response to season one was incredible and I can’t wait for audiences to discover even more local stories, delicious recipes and inspirational chefs. I’m so ready for this journey.”
According to Pierre Cloete, commercial director for Africa at BBC Studios, there is a “real appetite for local content. This announcement reflects our commitment to bring even more local commissions to the channel. It’s very exciting to have season 2 ready for production and to see the show going from strength to strength.”
Meanwhile, another Rapid Blue hit, Come Dine With Me South Africa, has returned for an eighth season on Wednesdays at 20:00.
