Your farm pets might be part of the working staff or a loving family companion, however, they are up against a different set of health hazards.
State vet Dr Alicia Cloete joins us and shares some important information regarding the health risks for pets and ways to take care of them. This is an episode not to be missed.
Vaccinations and shelter
According to Cloete, it is important to provide shelter for your pets to avoid becoming victims to predators. But one of the most common diseases that is quite deadly in animals is rabies. “It is necessary to ensure that your farm animals are vaccinated against rabies, preferably every year,” she explains.
But that’s not all, because of the excellent outdoors farm animals will inevitably be exposed to ticks and fleas as they naturally occur in the wild. “It is important to check your pets regularly for ticks and fleas and also treat them regularly to get rid of these pests and parasites,” she says.
Furthermore, Dr Cloete delves into some disease risks due to ticks and fleas.
Catching up with #SoilSista
And this week, we celebrate #SoilSista, Lebohang Dhludhlu who in 2019, solely envisioned herself making some extra cash with chickens. But the labour of her love had some other plans.
In this episode, Cloete also discusses:
