Every farmer would love to have the biggest and baddest John Deere tractor. However, let’s be honest, not every farmer needs one and that’s why it’s important to lay everything on the table before making any decisions regarding mechanisation.

John Deere’s tactical marketing planner, Pieter Pienaar, helps new farmers get set up with the right machinery so they can expand their businesses. And as far as he is concerned, every farmer must ask themselves a few key questions before making any mechanisation purchase.

“The first question would be: what is your need? Followed by: what is the size of your farm and what are you farming with?”.

Later in the episode, he also shares advice for new farmers on how to make the most of available technology and machinery. Pienaar says farmers should evaluate their own requirements to determine if and when they will benefit from John Deere’s products.

“We all know agriculture is a time sensitive industry. If you plant maize or if you blonde too late, then your yield is not that great. If you start early planting, then the first crops are also not that good”

This is why making the right mechanisation choices are so important, he points out.

From nursing to farming

Pienaar also explains why farmers need to upgrade their practices at some point. That’s if they want to reach the maximum margin level.

He also talks tractor rentals and how this is a game-changer for small-scale farmers.

On this episode, we also feature a #SoilSista Theresa Makola, who switched careers from nursing to farming after surviving cancer. She tells us more about how her amazing journey started and the people who supported her along the way.
