Abortions in livestock are any farmer’s worst nightmare. Not only do they lead to a decrease in the overall productivity of the herd, but they may also pose a risk to the health of the remaining animals in the herd.
According to Dr Sakhi Nkosi, a technical veterinarian at Afrivet, the causes of abortions in livestock are diverse and extensive, with common factors existing across regions and seasons. It is, therefore, important that farmers know exactly what they are dealing with.
Infectious causes
Nkosi explained that infectious causes of abortions consist of a range of viruses.
“For instance, bluetongue virus is prevalent in sheep, but cattle can also be affected. Bovine viral diarrhoea virus is observed in cattle, while rift valley fever occurs in particularly sheep after heavy rains when mosquito populations rise, leading to abortion storms.”
A fundamental aspect of abortion control in a cattle herd, for instance, is maintaining comprehensive records of abortion events. Identifying the causes in each documented case of abortion is crucial, Nkosi said.
Furthermore, reporting such cases to a veterinarian is essential for effective management and prevention strategies.
“Preventing infectious abortions involves robust disease control strategies, including a closed herd policy, thorough screening, and quarantine procedures for newly acquired or introduced animals, such as rented bulls. Additionally, maintaining high levels of biosecurity is crucial,” he explained.
In this episode, Nkosi also discusses:
- Post-abortion management;
- Vaccines available for livestock; and
