Thabo Mokone, the MEC for the Limpopo department of agriculture and rural development, emphasised the need for experienced personnel to prioritise the province’s developmental agricultural agendas.
Speaking to Food For Mzansi just days before South Africans went to the polls, Mokone discussed the current administration’s impact on agriculture and the future direction. He highlighted the necessity for adequate resource allocation to developmental projects.
“We need to bring in people like those from the private sector. We also need to move into smart agriculture that is technology-based,” Mokone stated.
Moreover, Mokone underscored the importance of addressing issues within communal property associations (CPAs) and improving infrastructure.
Strategic leadership in agricultural development
Since assuming office in October 2022, Mokone has played a crucial role in steering agricultural development in Limpopo. Reflecting on his tenure, he said, “When I joined this department, I noticed a lack of awareness about agriculture. We started by revisiting schools previously designated as agricultural but neglected, ensuring they received the necessary resources.”
Mokone also highlighted the revival of the Rural Agriculture and Biodiversity Centre (RABAC) programme, aimed at revitalising neglected farms and enhancing resource allocation. “We have spent almost 96% of our budget,” he noted.
Addressing the complex issue of land reform, Mokone acknowledged the slow pace and stressed the importance of effectively utilising existing land. “If we can make land available to previously disadvantaged people productive, it will be easier to argue for more land,” he argued.
In this episode, he also discusses:
- Strategies for future growth;
- Lessons learned in governance; and
- Addressing urgent needs.
