Weaning is one of the most critical transitions in a calf’s life. Executed correctly, it stimulates rumen development, supports uninterrupted daily weight gain, and prepares calves for the feedlot or breeding herd.
Done prematurely or without proper preparation, it can trigger severe growth checks, immune suppression, and unnecessary distress for both calves and cows.
Livestock consultant and stud breeder Mampuru Madiga of TauriiConn Industries, alongside commercial cattle producer Pholisa Bidla, share practical, field-tested strategies to minimise weaning stress and preserve growth momentum.
1. Look beyond the calendar
While commercial beef calves are traditionally weaned between seven and eight months of age, calendar age alone should never dictate the weaning date.
Madiga emphasises that producers must evaluate a combination of physiological and environmental factors:
- Frame and weight: The calf’s live mass relative to its dam.
- Calf performance: General health status and average daily gain (ADG).
- Dam condition: The cow’s body condition score (BCS).
- Lactation demands: Current milk yield versus nutritional availability.
- Environmental pressures: Seasonal veld conditions and available supplementary feed.

“Our calves are generally weaned between seven and eight months of age, but age is only one metric,” says Madiga. “We evaluate the calf’s weight relative to its mother, its overall performance, and the physical condition of the cow before making a final decision.”
On Madiga’s operation, beef calves are typically weaned once they reach 40% to 50% of the cow’s mature body weight, allowing strong post-weaning growth to compensate for slightly lighter weights under extensive grazing conditions.
2. Recognise when early weaning is necessary
Under specific environmental or physical pressures, weaning before the standard seven-to-eight-month mark becomes essential to protect farm profitability.
Madiga notes that early weaning should be triggered when:
- The calf experiences failure of passive transfer (insufficient early colostrum).
- The calf displays poor growth performance despite normal suckling.
- The cow yields insufficient or low-quality milk.
- High lactation demands cause the cow’s body condition to drop below target scores.
“If we notice a cow losing condition because she is pulling heavily on her body reserves to produce milk, we wean the calf early to protect her health and ensure she rebreeds on schedule,” Madiga explains.

In cases where maternal milk supply is severely compromised, calves should be introduced to a high-quality milk replacer or texturised calf starter ration before transitioning fully to solid feed.
3. Prepare the rumen well in advance
According to Bidla, successful weaning begins weeks before calves are physically separated from their dams.
As a calf matures, its multi-compartment stomach system must transition from digesting liquid milk in the abomasum to fermenting fibrous forage and grains in the rumen. By the target weaning date:
- The rumen papillae must be fully developed.
- Calves should be confidently consuming dry forage and concentrates.
- Solid feed, not milk, must provide the majority of daily metabolic nutrients.
“Introducing creep feed 30 to 40 days before weaning is essential because it bridges nutritional gaps and significantly reduces separation stress,” Bidla points out.
Bidla stresses that creep feeding is especially valuable when winter grazing quality drops, milk production declines, or when producers want to boost weights prior to auction. For dairy calves separated shortly after birth, solid starter rations must be introduced within the first week of life to stimulate early rumen development.
4. Avoid stacking stressors
Guidelines from the KwaZulu-Natal department of agriculture recommend withdrawing liquid milk only after a calf sustainably consumes a minimum of 0.5 kg of solid starter meal per day for three consecutive days.
When transitioning, milk can be reduced gradually over seven days. However, abrupt liquid withdrawal is acceptable if calves are already consuming solid rations aggressively.
Crucially, veterinary extension guidelines advise strongly against stacking multiple stressful management procedures simultaneously. Avoid performing the following during the weaning window:
- Castration or branding.
- Dehorning or disbudding.
- Immediate transport to unfamiliar camps, auction yards, or pens.
Where possible, routine processing (vaccinations, branding, castration) should be completed at least 30 days prior to weaning, or delayed until 7 to 10 days post-weaning.
5. Implement low-stress weaning techniques
Reducing separation anxiety directly preserves dry matter intake and prevents post-weaning weight loss.
“The closer calves remain to their dams during the transition, the less distress they experience,” explains Madiga.
Proven low-stress management options:
- Two-step weaning (nose rings): Fitting temporary, non-invasive plastic nose plates (anti-suckle devices) prevents suckling while allowing the calf to remain alongside its mother in the pasture for 7 to 10 days before physical separation.
- Fenceline weaning: Placing cows and calves in adjacent pastures separated by a secure, high-visibility fence allows visual and auditory contact while preventing nursing.
- Transition rations: Offering highly palatable, energy-dense starter feeds encourages immediate feed intake upon separation.
“High-quality feed acts as a bridge from a liquid diet to solid rations,” says Madiga. “It drives feed intake, supports rumen microbes, and minimises growth checks.”
6. Monitor post-weaning performance closely
The first 7 to 14 days following separation represent a high-risk window for respiratory diseases such as bovine respiratory disease (BRD).
Daily monitoring parameters:
- Water intake: Ensure calves locate and use water troughs immediately.
- Feed intake: Track daily dry matter consumption.
- Behaviour: Watch for excessive pacing, continuous vocalisation, or isolation.
- Clinical health: Inspect for nasal discharge, drooping ears, laboured breathing, or sunken flanks.
While minor weight stasis can occur, calves should continue eating and drinking normally. High-risk or nervous calves benefit from being housed with calm, older companion animals. Routine health protocols – including deworming, targeted mineral supplementation, and booster vaccinations – must be maintained.
7. Healthy cows raise stronger calves
Madiga emphasises that long-term weaning success begins long before the calf is born.
“Everything traces back to the cow,” Madiga concludes. “A healthy cow in optimal body condition produces superior colostrum, abundant milk, and raises a more resilient calf.”
Providing pregnant dams with adequate plane-of-nutrition, winter licks, and preventive healthcare directly dictates milk yield, calf birth weight, and ultimate weaning performance.
