The spekboom is a powerhouse plant. It is an air-purifying, health-boosting, and climate-friendly succulent that can soothe sore throats, aid bone health, and add a fresh twist to salads. Plus, it is easy to grow.
A recent Health For Mzansi article highlights this remarkable plant, also known as porkbush, which is widely found across South Africa and brimming with health and environmental benefits.
KwaZulu-Natal resident Sazi Mbaniwa first discovered the advantages of spekboom in 2017. “I found that it’s a hunger suppressant, so it really helped when I was trying to lose weight. It’s also good for bones due to its high magnesium levels.”
Aside from culinary uses, spekboom absorbs carbon effectively, making it a natural air purifier for homes. “It tastes good and is an amazing carbon sink. So, it makes a good air purifier. You can have it as a potplant in your house,” Mbaniwa adds.
Traditional remedies and uses
Besides being a valuable indoor plant, spekboom has medicinal uses, as explained by plant pathologist Tebogo Molemela.
“Beyond its health benefits, it contributes to climate change mitigation as it absorbs more carbon from the atmosphere. Additionally, there is more rainfall where these plants dominate.”
Traditionally, spekboom leaves are chewed to quench thirst, relieve sore throats, and soothe skin issues like sunburn or rashes.
Horticulturist Thabo Movundlela highlights the porkbush’s resilience.
“Porkbush grows well in direct, bright sunlight and thrives from spring to summer. Due to its ability to absorb a lot of water, bottom watering is highly recommended.” For easy cultivation, Movundlela suggests vegetative propagation over seed planting.
This unassuming plant, with its potent mix of health, environmental, and aesthetic benefits, is a remarkable addition to any home.
