The Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Ms. Thoko Didiza, MP has taken the decision to suspend all movement of cattle in the whole country. The Ministers decision is aimed at halting the continued spread of Foot and Mouth Disease in the country. Happy Monday, Mzansi! We are almost halfway through the year (can you believe it?!) and the agriculture sector is buzzing!

It’s a new week in Mzansi and exciting opportunities in agriculture abound!  Have a look at this week’s  agriculture  events in South Africa, some of which you can access from the comfort of your own home.

Held across two days, the event sets out to connect various stakeholders in the global agriscience industry. Participants get to share the findings of their research, contribute to the ICABS knowledge base and forge linkages with their international colleagues.

Unpacking potential solutions to climate justice 

Researchers from the University of Cape Town (UCT) and Coventry University in the United Kingdom have collaborated to form the Farming for Climate Justice Project. The project, aimed at researchers, activists and practitioners, is centred on food and farming system transformation.  

To aid the discussion, a three-part webinar series was launched on Wednesday, 19th May. This week’s webinar is a discussion and critical analysis of nature-based solutions. On the panel is Rachel Wynberg from UCT and Michel Pimbert from Coventry University.

Is vertical farming the solution? 

Soil erosion, climate change, and an expanding population are all factors that challenge the sustainability of the global food system. Punted by many as a solution to these issues is the production of food on vertical surfaces, otherwise known as vertical farming.  

Food for Sustainability is hosting a webinar on this practice entitled “Vertical farming: today and tomorrow”. The webinar aims to educate participants on the possibilities of vertical farming, solving today’s challenges and solutions already found to be successful.

Thursday 27 – 28 May 

Innovation in the agri technology 

Technology and innovation are the topics under discussion at the Agriculture Technology Conference. Taking place at the Emperor’s Palace Convention Centre in Johannesburg. The conference aims to explore sustainability in agriculture, new and trending agricultural technologies, food safety technology, and agricultural innovation.  

Hosted by Agri SA, Agricultural Research Council (ARC), National Agricultural Marketing Council (NAMC), and Agriverg, the conference takes place over two days. The packed programme features a number of notable speakers, including Christo Van Der Rheede from Agri SA and Dr Sifiso Ntombela from NAMC.

Preparing for World Milk Day

1 June is World Milk Day, and to celebrate, the Global Dairy Platform is hosting an online event under the theme “Milk Sustains Our Bones”. To participate, all you need to do register here, then partake in the social media conversation under the hashtags #WorldMilkDay and #EnjoyDairy. You can also host an online campaign through TikTok challenges, Twitter chats, Facebook or Instagram Lives, etc.
