FairPlay and Food For Mzansi are currently hosting a webinar exploring the food safety issues plaguing South Africans and South African farms, retailers and industry. The webinar promises to unpack how farmers, distributors, retailers, policymakers and consumers all have a role to play in food safety as a significant public health issue.
Food safety is intrinsically linked to public health, which is in turn linked to economic security. And access to safe and affordable food is the right of every South African.
Industry experts reckon that there is a need for greater awareness of the risks of potentially contaminated food, as well as greater regulatory intervention in monitoring imports and curbing predatory trade practices such as dumped imports which may be contaminated or of poor quality.
In the webinar, Food For Mzansi’s Dawn Noemdoe and FairPlay founder Francois Baird, along with a panel of experts, will discuss the risks and challenges in securing safe food for everyone in Mzansi.
Panellists include Matlou Setati, executive for the Food Safety Initiative at the Consumer Goods Council of South Africa, and Dr Hein Nel, executive director at the Food Safety Agency.
Professor Kris Willems, the former executive dean of the faculty of engineering technology at KU Leuven University, will also be joining live from Belgium.
