The pig farming industry in South Africa presents both opportunities and challenges for farmers, one of the challenges being maintaining profitability. In this episode, seasoned pig farmer Roland Trout shares insights on how to run a profitable pig farming operation.
From breeding to health management, Trout outlines the key elements farmers need to consider to succeed in the competitive pig farming industry.
Genetics play a critical role in the success of a pig farming operation. Trout stresses that purchasing pigs from reputable breeders with proven lineages is essential. Poor genetic quality can result in numerous problems, including inbreeding, which leads to deformities and reduced productivity.
“[If] you’re buying from people that don’t have a [record of the] lineage of where the male comes from, or where the female comes from, you don’t know where you’re going. You’re going to be at a standstill. [Knowing] the genetics is a good thing to avoid inbreeding.” Trout advises.

Feed is another crucial factor in achieving profitability in pig farming. Trout explains that each pig should receive about two kilograms of quality daily feed. However, for farmers who cannot afford commercial feed brands, mixing their own feed from raw materials such as maize can be a viable option.
“Scraps that you get from your kitchen, a lot of people give their pig stuff like that to feed on. However, the pigs don’t grow optimally so that it can be profitable,” said Trout.
He also points out that the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (Sappo) sets pig prices nationally based on the price of maize. Therefore, securing affordable, high-quality feed is essential for maintaining profit margins.
