Want to optimise your grazing systems for maximum productivity? In this episode, Dr Gilbert Pule, a researcher in animal production at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), unpacks factors essential to designing effective grazing systems, and explores how these elements differ based on cattle type and grazing terrain characteristics.
Pule says, “It all boils down to understanding the costs involved in setting up a grazing system and the return on investment farmers can expect.”
He adds that there is no one-size-fits-all approach. The type of livestock you raise and the scale of your operation will determine the specific tools and infrastructure you need, and that impacts the cost.
Grazing management
Pule emphasises the importance of calculating stocking rates – essentially, how many animals your land can sustainably support.
“Continuous grazing can lead to uneven use of pastures while rotational grazing allows for better pasture recovery and a wider variety of plant life.”
He also discussed intensive grazing systems, which aim to maximise productivity on a smaller land area but require close monitoring to avoid overgrazing.
Finding cost-effective ways to manage invasive plants that compete with livestock for resources is another challenge, Pule says.
“We might need to combine different methods, including targeted herbicides, introducing natural predators, and managing grazing patterns. But the key is careful planning to achieve results without breaking the bank.”
In this episode, he also discusses:
- Implementing cost-effective strategies to maximise livestock productivity;
- Grazing management practices impact;
- Weather patterns and seasonal changes influence.
