She underscores the role of antioxidants and amino acids in enhancing exercise performance and potentially inhibiting tumor growth.

Meanwhile, Nangamso Mtamzeli-Cekiso, a horticultural scientist, sheds light on the diverse varieties of watermelon in South Africa and its adaptability to different climates. Notably, watermelon’s drought tolerance makes it a valuable source of hydration in water-scarce regions.
Planting and cultivation tips are shared, emphasising the importance of soil quality, temperature, and timing for optimal growth. Mtamzeli-Cekiso advises on ideal soil pH and temperature conditions, crucial for successful germination and yield.

“Soils with a pH of 5.8 to 6.8 can be used to grow these crops. Soil temperatures above 1800C are required for uniform seed germination. Saline soils should be avoided for watermelon production.”
Harvesting techniques are also discussed, stressing the importance of picking watermelons at the right time to maximise freshness and shelf life. Various methods, including visual cues and refractometer testing, are suggested for determining ripeness.
