Nederburg, a famous winery in Paarl in the Western Cape, has again been recognised as one of the world’s 50 most admired wine brands by Drinks International. This is the sixth time the winery has made the prestigious list, joining iconic names such as Antinori in Italy, Concha y Toro in Chile, and Penfolds in Australia.
Nederburg’s inclusion on the list is based on a survey of prominent wine buyers, sommeliers, Masters of Wine, wine writers, and educators from every continent, who selected the winery based on three criteria: quality and consistency, price-to-quality ratio, and the strength of branding and marketing.
The winery’s general manager, Kate Jackson, said: “To make it onto the list at any point is a great honour. But to do so at a time of fiercely accelerated global competition is a big achievement for us. We could not be prouder or more motivated.”
Global accolades stacking up
Nederburg’s cellar master Samuel Viljoen was also recently featured as a Master Winemaker 100 of 2023 in another global publication, The Drinks Business, further solidifying the winery’s reputation for excellence.
Jackson attributes the winery’s continued success to their investment in wine-growing and winemaking skills, their emphasis on regenerative farming, assiduous water stewardship recognised by WWF South Africa, and their protection of a close and long-standing network of supplier wine growers.
She added that Nederburg makes collectable, limited-edition, as well as higher-volume wines at the same time in the same cellars, led by the same team heads.
“We accord the same level of respect to all our wines and our wine consumers,” said Jackson.
“In our marketing, we try to remain interesting, relevant and accessible to the full range of wine lovers, from aficionados to those looking for the simple pleasure of good wine. We do this by enabling our consumers to taste, learn and discover our wide range of wines.”
Nederburg is also a regular recipient of awards at the Decanter World Wine Awards and the International Wine & Spirit Competition, as well as at competitions held in South Africa, including the Veritas Awards and the Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.
Pop goes the wine cork!
The trusted brand sells in over 75 countries around the world, and in South Africa, the purchase frequency of its popular red blend, Baronne, works out at the equivalent of one bottle being opened every 15 seconds.
Nederburg’s inclusion in the world’s 50 most admired wine brands list is a testament to the winery’s dedication to producing consistent excellence and its ability to remain relevant and accessible to wine lovers worldwide.
