New-era farmers will have a dedicated platform at this year’s Nampo Cape, with Food For Mzansi and the Western Cape P.L.A.S. Farmers’ Alliance joining forces for a special programme focused on practical solutions to some of the biggest challenges facing farmers.

The special programme for emerging farmers will take place on Thursday, 10 September from 09:00 to 11:45 at the Food For Mzansi venue inside the Santam Auditorium in Bredasdorp Park.

The programme will bring emerging farmers into conversation with policymakers, agricultural experts and industry leaders on issues ranging from land reform and title deeds to access to government support, agricultural insurance and alternative funding models.

Rather than simply highlighting the challenges facing emerging farmers, the session aims to focus on practical solutions and give farmers an opportunity to engage directly with people working in these areas.

Tackling the issues farmers face

The morning will open with an introduction to the Western Cape P.L.A.S. Farmers’ Alliance, which will outline its vision, objectives and role in creating new opportunities for emerging farmers through partnerships, support and improved access to resources.

This will be followed by a panel discussion looking at some of the most pressing issues facing farmers.

The programme will cover key agricultural risk and insurance considerations, alongside land reform and the process of securing title deeds.

Michael Brinkhuis, chief director: agricultural producer support and development at the Western Cape department of agriculture, will discuss access to the Comprehensive Agricultural Support Programme (CASP).

Falon Mars of Mars Rossouw Attorneys INC. will offer practical legal guidance on issues affecting farmers, including labour law, workplace disputes, evictions, wills and succession planning, helping farmers better protect their businesses, assets and livelihoods.

The programme will also look beyond traditional funding models, with Sibusiso Mabuza of Phahama Grain Phakama discussing alternative ways of financing agricultural enterprises.

Alfreda Mars of the Western Cape P.L.A.S. Farmers’ Alliance will bring a practical perspective from the grain sector, focusing on solutions to some of the challenges experienced by farmers.

The programme is open to emerging farmers attending Nampo Cape, and walk-ins are welcome. THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
