As the silly season approaches, pet owners gearing up for vacations are reminded to prioritise their furry companions’ health amid the excitement of travel. Different destinations come with varied health risks for pets, necessitating vigilance and preventive measures to ensure their well-being.
Jaisheila Keshav, head of Animal Health South Africa at Boehringer Ingelheim, underscores the importance of understanding the potential threats in popular holiday spots for pets. “Each location – whether it’s the bush, the beach, or the mountains – presents unique health challenges that could endanger your pet,” she notes.
Watch out for ticks and fleas
In bushy areas, ticks emerge as the primary concern. These external parasites not only cause skin irritation but also transmit babesiosis, commonly known as tick bite fever, posing a serious threat to dogs.
“Babesia parasites invade a dog’s red blood cells, leading to anaemia that can prove fatal,” warns Keshav. She advises pet owners to remain vigilant, regularly checking for ticks and seeking advice on effective prevention methods before travelling.
Transitioning to beach destinations, Keshav highlights fleas and internal parasites as significant dangers. Fleas, causing discomfort and itching, can also harbour other pathogens that may harm dogs.
“Using vet-recommended flea control products is essential to safeguard your pet’s health,” recommends Keshav, emphasising the potential transmission of tapeworms from fleas to both pets and humans.
For mountainous regions, Keshav cautions about the risk of dogs contracting various worm species from soil or contaminated droppings of birds or rodents. Prevention through deworming before the trip and vigilant observation for symptoms of worm infestation are vital precautions.
Consult a vet rather sooner than later
Recognising the urgency of prompt action in case of illness, Keshav emphasises consulting a vet immediately upon noticing any worrisome symptoms in pets during the holiday.
“Nobody wants a sick pet, especially during a vacation,” Keshav asserts. She stresses the necessity of consulting with a vet before departure to receive tailored preventive advice. Additionally, if a pet exhibits signs of illness while away, seeking the nearest veterinary care is paramount. “It’s better to err on the side of caution,” she concludes.
Prioritising a pet’s health while holidaying not only ensures their well-being but also contributes to a stress-free and enjoyable vacation for pet owners. Vigilance, preventive measures, and swift action in case of illness remain the cornerstone of responsible pet care during holiday travels.
