As the year draws to a close, the South African Pork Producers’ Organisation (Sappo) reflects on a period of remarkable achievements and unwavering commitment to its members. In his year-end message, CEO Dr Peter Evans highlighted several key initiatives and milestones that demonstrate Sappo’s dedication to innovation, sustainability, and community.
One of the most exciting developments is PigX, a ground-breaking initiative modelled after the TED Talk format. “PigX is based on the ‘ideas worth spreading’ concept,” Evans explains.
“All talks are recorded and freely available on Sappo’s website and social media platforms, offering valuable knowledge to pig farmers across the country.” Notably, season 2 focused on showcasing sustainable practices, with farmers sharing innovative ways to reduce their carbon footprint and incorporate renewable energy.
Movement app enhances traceability
Sappo’s commitment to transparency and efficiency is evident in the development of the Movement app. This innovative tool improves animal movement tracking, benefiting both export traceability and disease outbreak management. “The app also enhances data accuracy for pig markets and abattoirs, leading to more efficient levy collection,” Evans adds.
Recognising the importance of biosecurity across all farm sizes, Sappo partnered with the Whitley team to develop a comprehensive biosecurity assessment tool. This online platform provides farmers with a valuable resource to evaluate their biosecurity practices, regardless of their operation’s scale.
Investing in the future
Sappo’s dedication to its members extends beyond immediate solutions. The Sappo Academy, an online pre-production training platform, replaces physical training and ensures accessible learning opportunities for pig farmers across the country. Additionally, the organization’s business development team actively supports farmers through farmer days, study groups, and farm visits, sharing valuable technical expertise.
Sustainability remains a top priority for Sappo, with Evans emphasising their commitment to “super sustainability and ESG (environmental, social, and governance).”
Working with Rabobank and other stakeholders, the organisation is developing comprehensive ESG compliance metrics within the Pork 360 programme, ensuring responsible practices throughout the industry. Furthermore, SAPPO has partnered with a major South African financial institution to promote ESG compliance among its members, solidifying its dedication to a sustainable future.
The year 2023 was not just about new initiatives; it was also a time to celebrate achievements and acknowledge contributions. Sappo’s annual general meeting provided a platform for open discussions, collaboration, and strategic planning, showcasing the strong sense of community within the organisation.
Exciting times ahead
Notably, the year saw the departure of former CEO Johann Kotzé, whose visionary leadership Evans commended. “Johann leaves behind a legacy of innovation and a clear vision for the future.”
As Sappo steps into the new year, Evans expresses optimism and confidence. “The achievements of the past year serve as a foundation for even greater success in the years to come,” he declares. “We remain committed to innovation, sustainability, and the continuous improvement of our practices.”
