Farmers are rethinking their farming methods to increase yields, reduce costs and ultimately improve productivity. In this episode of Farmer’s Inside Track, Netafim technical advisor Gary Frances offers some advice on how to choose the right irrigation equipment.

In the episode Frances gives a breakdown of what precision irrigation is and how this benefits farmers.

When it comes to irrigation planning, Frances explains that it can be quite expensive, however, Netafim has dedicated experts to help farmers. Farmers can go to their website and click on the tab “Ask an expert”.

“We can advise the farmers that don’t have access to sophisticated irrigation companies [on what products to use] depending on the crop they grow.”

During the episode, Frances also unpacks factors farmers should consider when buying irrigation equipment.

“First and foremost, one has to look at your water supply. Are your going to rely solely on rainfall or do you have some water that you can irrigate with?”

Frances points out the benefits between drip irrigation systems and sprinkler systems, and how Netafim assists farmers in making the best decisions based on their soil and crop.

Need help with irrigation maintenance?

Maintenance of systems are quite important, Frances explains, because the quality of water is prone to change. For instance, the quality of water from a river can change overnight.

“So, one has to continually check your filtration system, make sure that that is up to standard, and that it is being maintained.”

He also gives practical tips and examples of how this can be done.

In the episode, Frances also shares:

  • How farmers can go about getting a high quality irrigation system that fits their wallet;
  • Services the Netafim team has to offer farmers when it comes to precision irrigation and making best irrigation choices; and more.
