Building a business entails more than just locating profitable methods of operation. Putting purpose at the centre of your plan could prove decisive, say the experts.
In this episode of Farmer’s Inside Track, we chat with Agnes Hove, the director of African Women in Agriculture, and Paul Kim, the co-founder of People Flow, a software company that develops paperless HR solutions for blue-collar enterprises.
Farming is not child’s play, says Hove. She emphasises that in farming, people should be prepared for challenges – as they have encountered themselves – such as overgrown plants and weed-infested fields.
Farming is not an easy endeavour
“It’s very easy to give up. If you don’t know why you have started and what is it that you are trying to achieve, it’s very easy to get discouraged.”
She adds that frosts can be a source of misery if you wake up to find your crops ruined by the cold. Right there and then, one could lose hope.
“Farming is a labour of love and a partnership with nature, because you can’t tell when the rain is coming. It’s also impossible to predict when frost is coming, as well as drought.”
Having a reason to keep going
Knowing that production in farming is crucial, effective financial management and sound decision-making are both essential to the success of any business, Kim says.
“A good purpose also helps you to know what to say no to. We have a lot of different options and a lot of exciting things. Having a clear purpose, however, helps you decide what to say yes or no to.”
Throughout the session, experts discuss:
- The importance of employees.
- Developing a positive work environment in your company.
- The importance of expansion and success in business.
