The wine industry is celebrating the appointment of the executive manager of South Africa Wine Industry Information and Systems (SAWIS), Yvette van der Merwe, as the president of the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV).
Van der Merwe’s appointment marks the first time an African woman has held this prestigious position since the OIV’s establishment in 1924.
With a career spanning nearly three decades, Van der Merwe has been a pivotal figure in the South African wine sector, contributing significantly to its growth and global standing, according to a statement by SAWIS.
Her long-standing service as the president of the Economy and Law Commission at the OIV, coupled with her leadership at SAWIS, highlights her dedication and influence in shaping the industry’s trajectory.
Van der Merwe’s appointment is hailed as a proud milestone for the South African wine industry, which has recognised her unwavering commitment and visionary leadership. Industry stakeholders have expressed confidence that her expertise will elevate the global wine industry and inspire future generations of African wine professionals.

Upon her appointment, Van der Merwe expressed her gratitude and commitment to advancing the OIV’s mission of promoting scientific research, technical cooperation, and sustainable development in the global wine sector.
“Being elected as OIV president is both an honour and a responsibility, which I am prepared to embrace with dedication and enthusiasm,” she said.
She emphasised her commitment to addressing global challenges in the wine industry.
“I recognise the global challenges facing the wine industry and am committed to addressing them through collaboration, innovation, and sustainable practices. Additionally, I pledge to support the successful execution of the OIV’s newly adopted strategic plan.”
The South African wine industry extended its heartfelt congratulations to Van der Merwe, confident in her ability to lead the global wine community towards a brighter future.
Special thanks were also extended to minister Naledi Pandor from the department of international relations and cooperation, and Thoko Didiza, former minister of the department of agriculture, land reform and rural development.
