Have you ever thought about having your own packhouse for your agribusiness? Agricultural packhouses play a pivotal role in the journey from field to table, ensuring that fresh produce reaches consumers in the best possible condition.
According to Siyabonga Cele, audit coordinator at Emensi Farming, there are a few essential aspects of agricultural packhouses, such as the equipment required, the significance of an optimal layout, and the critical importance of hygiene.
1. Packhouse layout
The layout of an agricultural packhouse is crucial for efficiently processing, sorting, grading, and packaging agricultural products.
Depending on the type of agricultural products, there are specific requirements especially when it comes to the building design. It is important to design the building with adequate space for all necessary equipment, workstations, storage, and office space.
“A packhouse can’t have windows, it can only have ventilators. It has to be closed because you don’t want any unwanted objects that might affect the product once it gets packed,” Cele explains.
2. Equipment used
Your packhouse will need a range of equipment, which can vary depending on the type of crops or products being processed.
According to Cele, some might be high-risk products for which they might need highly intensive care units. “And on the low-risk products, not much care is needed in terms of packing.”
Equipment may include:
- Conveyor belts to move products
- Scales
- Sorting and grading equipment
- Washing and cleaning equipment
- Packaging equipment
- Cold storage and refrigeration equipment
- Forklifts or pallet jacks
- Label printers and applicators
- Safety equipment
- Office equipment
- Maintenance tools
- Employee facilities such as break areas, and locker rooms
- Energy and utilities
- Backup power sources like generators
3. Packhouse hygiene
Hygiene is a fundamental aspect of agricultural packhouse operations that directly impacts food safety, product quality, regulatory compliance, and consumer confidence.
“The hygiene of the products is one of the major importance that’s why you need a packhouse. Because in most cases a lot of the vegetables, we as farmers grow,” says Cele.
Occasionally, packhouses are also audited on hygiene standards. “Sometimes you get an announced audit and other times unannounced.”
Cele further mentions that there is an unpredictable schedule regarding the audit. It happens annually when inspectors come out to make sure the packhouse is in a state of perfection.
Consumers today are increasingly concerned about the safety and quality of the food they purchase. A packhouse known for its high hygiene standards can build trust and confidence among consumers, leading to brand loyalty and repeat business.
