Tractors are crucial for agricultural operations, performing a wide range of tasks from land preparation to harvesting. Maximising their uptime and performance is essential for farm efficiency and profitability.
Gary Patience, an agriculture technician and farmer, explores preventative maintenance strategies and the integration of data-driven technologies to optimise tractor performance and minimise downtime.
Implementing a comprehensive preventative maintenance programme is vital. Daily checks should include engine oil, coolant, hydraulic fluid, and fuel levels. Additionally, a visual inspection of tyres, brakes, and hitch components ensures their functionality.
Regular checks and maintenance
“I believe that every operator should take responsibility for the piece of equipment that they operate. And so I have these checklists that they need to fill out, and then by the end of the week, they give these checklists to me. I go through them if there’s any problem, then I will work it into my planning for the next week and then repair these faults,” he explains.
He adds that periodic oil analysis can provide valuable insights into engine and transmission health. Identifying the presence of metal particles or abnormal wear patterns allows for early intervention, preventing major failures and associated repair expenses.
“Brakes are very important for everyone’s safety. So if there’s a brake issue, it needs to be reported immediately. Sometimes they just need to be adjusted, but sometimes there’s a component failure. When you drive a tractor, you usually listen for noises or sounds that aren’t usually there that usually means something is wrong,” he explains.
By implementing a comprehensive preventative maintenance programme coupled with the integration of data-driven technologies, farmers can significantly enhance tractor performance, minimise downtime, and optimise overall farm efficiency.
