The minister of agriculture, land reform and rural development, Thoko Didiza, has expressed her satisfaction with the recent release of economic data by Statistics South Africa, which highlights the pivotal role played by the agricultural sector in driving the country’s economic growth.

The second quarter of 2023 witnessed a remarkable resurgence in this sector, reaffirming its status as a key contributor to the country’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP).

During the second quarter of 2023, the agricultural sector recorded a robust growth rate of 4.2%. This impressive expansion can be largely attributed to a bountiful summer harvest of grains and oilseeds, along with strong horticultural exports. Notably, the value of South African agricultural exports for the same period reached a staggering R60.2 billion, representing a nearly 13% increase compared to the corresponding period in the previous year.

One of the standout agricultural achievements in 2023 is the projected harvest of 16.4 million tonnes of maize and approximately 743 thousand tonnes of sunflowers. This substantial crop yield is expected to bring much-needed relief to consumers by curbing food inflation.

By July 2023, food inflation had already decreased to 9.9%, providing a welcome respite for households.

Mzansi shines on global stage

Didiza attributed the impressive growth in the agricultural sector to the expanding global presence of South African agricultural products. She emphasised government’s commitment to nurturing international markets for these products while maintaining strong trade relationships with existing partners.

In line with this approach, in August 2023, the minister secured new export opportunities for South African avocados, beef, and various other animal products in countries such as Saudi Arabia and China.

Didiza emphasised government’s steadfast commitment to furthering these export initiatives. She stated, “The drive to open new export opportunities will continue as the government strives to grow a competitive, resilient, and export-oriented agriculture sector.”

The significant growth in the agricultural sector not only underscores its importance in the South African economy but also highlights the potential for continued prosperity through strategic investments in agriculture, trade, and international cooperation.

As the country looks ahead to the remainder of 2023, the agricultural sector’s robust performance serves as a beacon of hope, offering economic stability and promising prospects for both farmers and consumers alike.
