Eskort honours local stars with pimped up hot dogs

To celebrate the vibrant and lively South African culture, Eskort is recognising 12 local icons with its Real Hot Dogs of Mzansi awards. The hot dog made for comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout “wears” a knitted jersey because, well, that’s what he always wears

Twelve well-known South Africans, including comedian Schalk Bezuidenhout, will be honoured by processed meat producer Eskort as part of its new Real Hot Dogs of Mzansi awards.

The company says its inaugural awards shows appreciation “for the people, places and experiences that have helped to make South Africa the country we all know and love”.

And, in typical Mzansi style, each of the celebrities are celebrated with a unique hot dog combination inspired by their personalities. Eskort says the hot dog created for Bezuidenhout is captured through a “slapstick recipe” featuring a cheese griller, crispy onions, bacon and a knitted wool jersey.

Yes, you read that right…

“More award winners will be unveiled throughout the month on social media, with an exciting line-up that includes the who’s who of South Africa,” says Marcelle Pienaar, Eskort group marketing manager.

“From kapteins to captains, the sexy and the zany, these are real local heroes who have played a key role in shaping our amazing homes, representing some of the best that our country has to offer.”

Diverse range of hot dogs

While Eskort did not yet reveal the full list of awardees, they did mention that the hot dogs created for them will be as diverse as the people themselves.

Each will be made with products from the company’s range: from salt-of-the-earth smoked viennas to cheese Russians for the cheesy side of personalities, to Bockwurst as the seasoned performer, and chilli Russians exemplifying hotness.

“Our central goal is to recognise the famous and infamous events that have defined who we are as a nation – whether this be the things we love, or the things we love to hate,” says Pienaar.

“By commemorating these common experiences in a playful and quirky way, we believe that our awards will resonate strongly with all South Africans, no matter who you are or where you live.”

Besides the celebrities, the Real Hot Dogs of Mzansi awards will celebrate the “South Africanisms” that give our local culture its distinctive flavour, and set our country apart, adds Pienaar.

The first example of this is “The Parliament” award with a tongue-in-cheek, spicy hot dog that calls for a flame-grilled smoked vienna with spicy hot nacho chips on a charcoal roll.

“We’ve invited a wide range of celebrities and influencers to join us in the spirit of fun by creating their own zesty hot dog creations and sharing these with us on social media.”

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 12 global awards in the first three years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
