As farms become more digital and integrate IoT devices, they face increasing cyber threats. Understanding and addressing these threats is vital to protecting sensitive agricultural data and operations.
In this episode, agritech entrepreneur Ziphezinhle Gabuza explores the critical topic of digital safety in agriculture. Learn about the most common digital threats facing modern farms and how to protect your agricultural data from cyberattacks.
According to Gabuza, farm digital safety refers to a farm’s digital systems including cloud computing, IoT (Internet of Things) devices, passwords, and more.
“It is important that farmers use reputable service providers when setting up their digital infrastructure, such as Google or Amazon. These are established companies with a proven track record of security and have systems in place to protect you from cyberattacks.”
Gabuza also highlights the importance of two-factor authentication, IoT devices, and the role of farmworkers, stressing the need for training.
Updating digital systems
Gabuza warns farmers and farmworkers against opening unfamiliar emails. He cites a case in which someone clicked on a scam email.
“In Bangladesh, there was a story just a few months ago where the Bank of Bangladesh nearly lost one billion dollars due to a cyber hacker sending an email to the company. When an employee clicked on it, it opened up a gateway for the hacker to breach the bank’s security. That is why it is crucial for all staff to be trained in cybersecurity.”
Gabuza also discusses the importance of regularly updating software and digital systems, as well as the risks associated with using outdated systems.
