In a celebration of journalism innovation, Food For Mzansi Group has emerged as a prominent contender in the 2024 African Digital Media Awards, receiving no less than five nominations across various categories. Food For Mzansi and Daily Maverick each boast five nominations, showcasing their dominance across categories that feature media from South Africa, Nigeria, Kenya, Uganda, and Tunisia.
The annual competition, presented by WAN-IFRA, the global press organisation, features categories spanning creative projects, revenue initiatives, data visualisation, and AI integration, showcasing excellence in digital media across diverse domains.
According to a release issued by WAN-IFRA, a diverse panel of judges from across the globe has been assembled for the 2024 African Digital Media Awards. Hailing from various corners of the world, these esteemed individuals bring a wealth of expertise and experience to the table.
From France to Uganda, Mauritius to the United Kingdom, and beyond, judges such as Valérie Arnould in France, Katarzyna Ostrowska in Poland, and Professor George Nyabuga in Kenya represent a global perspective on digital media excellence. Their insights and discernment will play a crucial role in determining the winners of this prestigious competition.

Diverse excellence
Food For Mzansi Group’s nominations encompass a range of categories:
- Best use of video: The competition entry by Food For Mzansi – a multimedia summer campaign with South Africa Wine – highlights black-owned wine brands. Also nominated in this category are Daily Maverick and News24.
- Best digital subscription initiative: Food For Mzansi’s popular Farmer’s Inside Track operates as a membership club, offering farmers across South Africa invaluable insights, advice, and resources. Also nominated in this category is Daily Maverick.
- Best podcast: Both Food For Mzansi and its sister publication, Health For Mzansi, were nominated. Notably, Health For Mzansi clinched victory in this category last year. The third contender vying for the title is Media General from Ghana.
- Best innovative digital product: Acknowledged for its innovative approach, Mzansi Master Builders – Food For Mzansi’s very own Minecraft farm – introduces young readers to the publication and agriculture. InfoNile in Uganda and Netwerk24 in South Africa were also nominated.
In the line-up of nominations, Food For Mzansi and Daily Maverick lead the pack with five nominations each. Netwerk24 stands out with four nominations, while Media Hack Collective in South Africa and InfoNile in Uganda each received two nominations.
Additionally, several media houses earned one nomination each, including Mangeons bien in Tunisia, Sports Brief in Nigeria, MarkLives in South Africa, Media General in Ghana, Briefly News in South Africa, CITE in Zimbabwe, AFP Africa in Nigeria, and Legit.ng in Nigeria.
The winners of the 2024 African Digital Media Awards will be announced on Monday, 16 April 2024. To date, Food For Mzansi Group has won 15 global media awards since its launch in November 2018.
