The future is green and it’s happening indoors. South Africa’s cannabis industry is growing fast, thanks to cutting-edge tech like LED lighting and controlled environment agriculture.
In this episode, Stuart Spooner, director of the Lamp House, the exclusive South African distributor of Fluence horticultural lighting products in the country, highlights how advanced LED lighting and precision farming are taking farmers’ cannabis game to the next level.
Since cannabis was decriminalised in 2019, over 100 medical licenses have been granted, with a significant focus on export-quality medicinal cannabis. Controlled environment agriculture (CEA) is at the forefront, allowing farmers to regulate factors like temperature, humidity, and light, ensuring consistent, high-quality yields.
“In South Africa, we’re seeing a substantial push towards CEA, especially for cannabis destined for export markets,” says Stuart Spooner, director at The Lamphouse, a distributor of Fluence LED lighting. This approach enables growers to achieve up to six harvests annually compared to one or two with outdoor farming.

“LEDs help offset the high costs of indoor farming while lessening strain on the energy grid,” adds Spooner. They also optimise light intensity and spectrum, enhancing terpene and cannabinoid profiles critical for medicinal cannabis quality.
Despite high setup costs and regulatory complexities, the sector’s potential is immense. CEA not only benefits cannabis but offers year-round solutions for other crops, addressing climate change and water scarcity.
Spooner predicts, “With investment in innovation, South Africa’s cannabis industry can compete globally.”
