In a significant development for Southern Africa’s citrus sector, Gerrit van der Merwe has taken the helm as chairman of the Citrus Growers’ Association (CGA), succeeding Hannes de Waal.
The appointment comes amid rising prospects and challenges within the industry, with Van der Merwe poised to lead the charge towards greater sustainability and prosperity.
‘I’m ready to take over’
“I am deeply honoured to assume this role and follow in the footsteps of esteemed leaders before me. Citrus farming is not just a livelihood; it’s a heritage, a responsibility we carry forward with pride,” he said.
Van der Merwe’s tenure promises a renewed focus on community engagement and collaborative solutions to industry-wide challenges. “Our success as an industry hinges on our ability to work together, to uplift each other and our communities,” he emphasised.
The outgoing chairman, Hannes de Waal, expressed confidence in Van der Merwe’s leadership, stating, “I have full faith in Gerrit’s ability to steer the CGA towards even greater heights. His dedication to the industry and his innovative approach will undoubtedly benefit us all,” he said.
CGA CEO Justin Chadwick echoed these sentiments, highlighting Van der Merwe’s energy and expertise. “This is a pivotal moment for South African citrus, with vast opportunities on the horizon. Gerrit’s leadership will be instrumental in harnessing these opportunities and overcoming the challenges that lie ahead,” Chadwick affirmed.

Van der Merwe wasted no time in outlining his priorities, identifying logistics and market access as key areas of focus. “Efficient transportation and fair trade regulations are imperative for our industry’s growth.
“We must work closely with government and other stakeholders to address these issues and unlock the industry’s full potential,” he said.
As part of the CGA’s rotational leadership structure, Van der Merwe announced the appointment of De Waal and Jan-Louis Pretorius as vice chairmen. “Their experience and insights will be invaluable as we navigate the road ahead,” he stated.
With a clear vision and a commitment to collaboration, Van der Merwe embarks on his tenure as chairman, poised to lead the South African citrus industry towards a future of sustainable growth and prosperity.
