There is more to South Africa’ stone fruit industry than just being the largest stone fruit producer in Africa. Did you know that peaches, nectarines, and plums boasts an array of health benefits that include reducing stress and anxiety?
In an article published on Health For Mzansi, journalist Noluthando Ngcakani explores how these fresh juicy fruits with a “stone” in the center can help improve mental well-being.
The article also has three fruity recipes prepared by celebrity chef Zola Nene.
Wait, stone fruit reduces stress?
According to researchers from the Edith Cowen University in Australia, a diet rich in fruit and vegetables can significantly reduce stress and anxiety.
And although the mechanisms behind how fruit and vegetable consumption influences stress are still unclear, lead researcher, PhD candidate Simone Radavelli-Bagatini from ECU’s Institute for Nutrition Researcher, says key nutrients could be a factor.
“Vegetables and fruits contain important nutrients such as vitamins, minerals, flavonoids and carotenoids that can reduce inflammation and oxidative stress, and therefore improve mental well-being.
“Inflammation and oxidative stress in the body are recognised factors that can lead to increased stress, anxiety and lower mood.”
