A black-owned agro-processor, renowned for manufacturing its own mayonnaise, tomato sauce, and sweet chilli sauce, has now achieved yet another milestone: creating Johannesburg’s best kota.
Makhamisa Foods, a leading player in the food industry, proved their culinary prowess at the recent Jozi Kota Festival, held last week at Old Park Station in Newtown.
Kota enthusiasts and food lovers gathered in anticipation, and they were not disappointed. Makhamisa Foods, already celebrated for their unique condiments, stepped into the spotlight by preparing a kota that stood out among the myriad of flavours at the festival.
They indulged in some of Gauteng’s most exquisite kotas. The judges say Makhamisa Foods’ Kota creation was a testament to their innovative approach to traditional recipes, adding a distinctive touch that set them apart from the competition.
A special highlight of the festival was the “Best Jozi kota stall” challenge presented by Makhamisa Foods. This challenge was not just a competition; it was a celebration of the art of crafting a perfect Kota.

Showcasing kasi cuisine
All registered kota vendors had the opportunity to participate, showcasing their skills and creativity. The challenge sought to judge and celebrate not only the taste but also the presentation and innovative use of Makhamisa Foods’ condiments in the preparation of these beloved street food delights.
A panel of judges, including culinary experts chef Mo from Mo’s Food and Pastries, chef Ayanda from City Lodge Hotel Newtown, and brands activator Precious Ndzekeni, had the responsibility of tasting and evaluating the kota offerings from the participating stalls. The criteria for evaluation encompassed not only the flavours but also the creativity and presentation of the kotas.
The third-place honour was claimed by Zozo Kitchen, receiving a prize of R2 000. Dinga’s secured the second-place position and a prize of R3 000. However, it was Kitchen Candits from Makhamisa Foods who emerged victorious, receiving R5 000.
