Some of the country’s top hydroponic farming experts are set to participate in a two-day seminar focusing on the industry’s sustainability and its impact on food security. The event will be hosted at the Golden Horse Casino Hotel in Pietermaritzburg on Monday, 6 and Tuesday, 7 March 2023.
In this episode of Farmer’s Inside Track, the organising programme director, Nicole Kandhaia of KPR Conference and Trading, shares what to expect at the two-day seminar.
Kandhaia says, “Hydroponics is becoming more and more popular as a production system by black farmers. Unfortunately, it is technically demanding and there are not enough opportunities for these new and potential hydroponic farmers to gain capacity.”
What the KPR Group is offering at the seminar will be technical and practical support and information that will help farmers make better decisions about hydroponics.
What the seminar will provide
“This project intends to provide technical and business management information related to hydroponics so that these individuals are better positioned to make sustainable and efficient decisions relating to their current or envisaged hydroponic production enterprises,” she explains.
The seminar comes amid research that hydroponic farming benefits South Africa, such as increased food security, lower water usage, and higher yields. However, many farmers are struggling because it is technically demanding, and there is uncertainty about opportunities.
Kandhaia adds that they are well-prepared with a list of speakers that are well informed whose primary objective is to transfer knowledge as swiftly as they can. Even more exciting is the information about funding opportunities and the benefits of hydroponic farming.
