Mogamat Abrahams describes himself as a foolish chancer. As far as he is concerned, it is ultimately what led him to a fulfilling career in agriculture. Abrahams, the founder of Goodnews Natural Produce, farms chillies on the West Coast in the Western Cape.

In this episode, Abrahams talks more about his farming journey, navigating the chilli value chain and the endless opportunities the sector offers budding agriculturalists.

Growing up, he was never exposed to agriculture. But this did not deter him from pursuing a career in farming.

“Agriculture stands out as a business decision. There is always a demand and it was really just about finding out how to do it. And once I found out how to do it, it was all about trying to find the best way of doing it,” he explains.

Career highlights

What Abrahams enjoys most about the agricultural sector, are the challenges. “There are always new adventures to embark on,” he says.

What is even more amazing is the reward from the challenge to be able to grow to a better level. “I just love the limitless in it where you have the vast freedom to innovate,” he adds.

There’s so much more Abrahams can say about setbacks too. He mentions that when it happens, it should be taken with a pinch of salt and one should try and move forward with determination.

“ Don’t get demotivated because of the small setbacks. Sometimes we are holding on to too much of what we currently have,” he says.

In this episode, Abrahams also discusses:

  • Chilli farming and how he does it;
  • What his brand offers, and more.

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 15 global awards in the first four years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
