South Africa Wine was honoured with a top Industry Innovation Award at the 2026 Western Cape Economy Innovation Awards for its pioneering work in climate intelligence.

In a statement, the organisation said the award specifically recognises South Africa Wine’s support and funding of TerraClim, the home-grown agritech powerhouse developed in Stellenbosch.

Coming just three years after South Africa Wine was formed as the industry’s umbrella body, this accolade proves that the sector is becoming more agile, tech-savvy, and ready for the future.

Award-winning tech is saving vineyards

TerraClim is a practical tool that helps farmers make real-time decisions. By providing hyper-accurate climate data, it allows producers to stay one step ahead of changing environmental conditions.

Gerard Martin, research, development and innovation executive at South Africa Wine, said that for them, innovation is all about the long-term survival of vineyards.

“Research only really matters when it helps a producer make better decisions on the farm. This award is a win for every winemaker and farmer using these tools to adapt and thrive,” Martin said.

Sustainable solutions for a changing climate

What started as research at Stellenbosch University has evolved into a vital platform used by consultants and researchers across the board. TerraClim’s journey from a university spin-off to an industry essential shows what happens when long-term investment meets world-class research.

Chief executive officer and founder of TerraClim, Dr Tara Southey, said the recognition shows the power of industry standing shoulder-to-shoulder with researchers to create solutions that actually work in a changing climate.

Martin emphasised that South Africa Wine remains focused on initiatives that strengthen the industry’s competitiveness.

“Our goal is simple: to turn world-class climate intelligence into real-world sustainability for every vineyard in South Africa. By prioritising smart funding and collaboration, South Africa Wine is ensuring the industry stays resilient and continues to thrive in an increasingly unpredictable climate,” Martin said.
