He is only 21 years old, but Thabo Dithakgwe from Vryburg in North West already has three years’ experience in running his own business and the pictures from his farm say he’s enjoying every moment of it.

While many of his peers roam the campuses of tertiary institutions, Dithakgwe, also known as Nasi Junior, can be found among his cattle. He began working his farm when he was a mere 18 years old, learning everything from his grandpa, Nasi, from whom he inherited the land.

Since Food For Mzansi checked in with Dithakgwe two years ago , his herd of Bonsmara cattle has expanded.

It may not have been smooth sailing when he lost some goat kids to finances and diet issues recently but he is looking to the future and making plans for his business with his signature youthful enthusiasm.

He has a newfound interest in berry growing, inspired by local farmer Matshediso Mooketsi who has been cultivating on what some may refer to as unforgiving territory. “She is doing extremely well there, and it has piqued my curiosity for entering the berry market. Dried berries are definitely on my bucket list.”

THE NEW FACE OF SOUTH AFRICAN AGRICULTURE

With 21 global awards in the first six years of its existence, Food For Mzansi is much more than an agriculture publication. It is a movement, unashamedly saluting the unsung heroes of South African agriculture. We believe in the power of agriculture to promote nation building and social cohesion by telling stories that are often overlooked by broader society.
