Did you know you can feed a family of four on a budget of R50 or less? That’s right, feeding your family a filling and nutritious meal does not have to be expensive.
In a recent article published by Health For Mzansi, experts share how consumers can make the most out of affordable ingredients and local produce.
According to Phiwokuhle Myoyo, feeding a family of four on a budget of R20 to R50 is very much possible.
“The key is to make good use of vegetables and protein sources,” Moyo shared in the article. “With careful planning and some clever choices, it’s possible to make a healthy meal that will please the whole family.”

Buy local and save
Meanwhile, Mpho Nene recommends buying locally sourced ingredients to save money and support the community.
“We constantly have to look for ways to cut costs, still be full, and feed those around us as food is so expensive these days,”Nene said.
Rather than driving long distances to get frozen meals, Nene recommends purchasing veggies from nearby growers. Food grown locally, according to Nene, is fresh and supports the community.

Pasta on a budget
The article also featured celebrity chef Siphokazi Mdlankomo, who shared examples for breakfast, lunch and dinner.
The Pasta & Me meals, which are part of Shoprite’s Homegrown line featuring locally-produced food, is another to get in a nutritious meal for little money.
Aziza Parker, the founder of Pasta & Me, created three different meal options: steak and chops, jalapeño and cheese, and roast chicken. In the package, the Pasta & Me one-pot meal includes a large portion of noodles, soya chunks, spices and dehydrated vegetables.
