In a landmark development for the wine industry, the South African Wine Industry Professional Body (SAWIPB) has registered as a non-profit company with a new governing structure. This transition empowers the organisation to designate wine industry professionals, marking a pivotal step in its evolution as an independent entity, distinct from South Africa Wine, which remains a primary member and key funder.

At the forefront of this transformation is the newly appointed SAWIPB board, comprised of industry leaders who bring a wealth of knowledge and diverse expertise. This dynamic group includes Barend Jordaan from Cape Wine Exporters, Denise Stubbs of Thokozani, Denzel Swarts from Zoetendal, Rydal Jaftha of Koopmanskloof, Celeste Le Roux of React24, and Nadia Hefer of Hive Collective.

Their combined experience across various sectors of the wine industry positions the board to effectively drive SAWIPB’s mission to elevate professional standards and enhance the global recognition of South African wines.

Strategic growth initiatives

The board members are not just figureheads; they represent a commitment to fostering a culture of excellence within the industry. Under the leadership of Kachné Ross, SAWIPB aims to promote knowledge sharing, protect consumer interests, and set high professional standards.

By establishing a framework for members to adhere to, the board ensures that continuous improvement remains at the core of the South African wine industry’s operations.

The SAWIPB board has outlined several strategic goals that will guide its efforts:

  • Elevating professional status: The board is dedicated to promoting and recognising the professional status of its members, ensuring that their expertise is acknowledged within the industry.
  • Collaborating with educational institutions: They plan to work closely with training bodies and tertiary institutions to ensure that industry qualifications align with the essential skills needed for success.
  • Facilitating networking opportunities: The board will provide a platform for professionals to connect, share ideas, and foster collaboration within the industry.
  • Developing best practices: Establishing models of best practices will be a key focus, enabling a unified approach to industry standards across the sector.
  • Continuous professional development: The board is committed to offering ongoing professional development opportunities, empowering members to grow and adapt in a competitive market.

Strengthening industry standards

With this robust governance structure, the SAWIPB board is well-equipped to navigate the complexities of the wine industry and advocate for its members effectively. The next significant milestone is to secure registration with the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA), enabling the body to designate professionals across the entire value chain.

Support from South Africa Wine reinforces a shared vision to enhance the quality and reputation of South African wines on the global stage.

“By investing in this independent body, South Africa Wine is ensuring that our industry thrives with a solid foundation of skilled professionals,” says Rico Basson, CEO of South Africa Wine.

Ross adds, “We encourage all industry professionals, affiliates, and training service providers to join SAWIPB at www.sawipb.co.za. Membership offers valuable growth opportunities and positions you at the forefront of an industry gaining recognition for its excellence. Together, we can build a brighter future for South African wine.”
