Join us for a captivating 16-episode podcast and YouTube series as we delve into the groundbreaking work of the South African Wine Industry Professional Body (SAWIPB). In meticulous detail, we explore how industry angels – dedicated professionals – shape the future of South Africa’s wine industry. Their time, expertise, and knowledge are driving transformative change and sustainability.
In the picturesque vineyards of South Africa, nestled at the foot of towering mountains, dedicated workers toil from sunrise to sundown. Many of them have honed their craft over years, even decades, accumulating practical experience without formal qualifications. But change is on the horizon.
Recognising the untapped potential and invaluable contributions of these professionals, South Africa Wine has spearheaded the creation of the South African Wine Industry Professional Body (SAWIPB). This pioneering initiative serves as a transformative platform, acknowledging their skills and propelling their careers forward.
In an interview with Food For Mzansi, Kachné Ross, the driving force behind SAWIPB and the people and skills development manager at South Africa Wine, shared her vision for the impact of this initiative on South Africa’s wine industry.
“We started this body to grow the learning culture for the South African wine industry. We were thinking holistically about how to bring all the knowledge and resources together to enhance the skills of our professionals,” Ross said.
SAWIPB goes beyond filling gaps; it aims to create a comprehensive framework for continuous professional development. As a non-regulated, voluntary professional body, it unites fragmented training programmes and initiatives under one umbrella, fostering a culture of ongoing learning and improvement.
Benefits for all: From individuals to wineries
What is great about SAWIPB? Ross emphasised that SAWIPB offers advantages to everyone in the wine industry. Whether you are an individual member or represent a winery, you will gain access to invaluable resources, knowledge-sharing events, and training opportunities. This enables workers to build career pathways, leveraging their expertise across various parts of the value chain.
The affiliation extends to training service providers as well. Accreditation and recognition enhance the overall quality of education within the industry.
One of SAWIPB’s most innovative aspects is its emphasis on competency rather than traditional certifications.
“We do competency-based surveys at basic, intermediate, and advanced levels,” Ross highlighted.
This approach values practical skills and recognises the experience of industry professionals, ensuring continuous knowledge expansion.

A community of experts
At the heart of SAWIPB’s structure are council members representing the entire value chain – from primary production and secondary production to marketing, wine tourism, logistics, and distribution.
“Our council members we regard as our community of expert practitioners… This community of expert practitioners have been chosen to represent the industry and to validate the information and resources we get together to be represented through the professional body to our members,” Ross explained.
SAWIPB aims not only to enhance industry sustainability but also to create opportunities for its members. Ross emphasised the social component, stating, “When we talk sustainability, we tend think about environmental sustainability. However, there is a big social component, and we want to keep the social component of our industry healthy.”
SAWIPB believes that maintaining a healthy social component within the industry is best achieved through education and support.
Designed as a support structure, SAWIPB provides resources to enhance both soft and technical skills across the industry. From farmworkers to winemakers, every individual finds ample opportunities for career advancement and personal growth.
“Many other sectors can learn from this initiative,” Ross noted. By addressing skills needs systemically and holistically, SAWIPB sets a benchmark for professional bodies across industries.
How to get involved
SAWIPB invites the wine industry to collaboratively enhance the industry’s knowledge base at all levels.
Joining SAWIPB is straightforward. Interested individuals and wineries can register on the SAWIPB website, www.sawipb.co.za, and sign the code of conduct. By doing so, they become part of a dynamic network dedicated to professional growth and industry excellence.
