Dutoit Agri executive director Pieter du Toit has been conferred the esteemed OSH Reinecke Frontrunner Award for 2024 by Hortgro, the representative body of South Africa’s deciduous fruit growers.

Du Toit becomes the third member of his family to receive this recognition, which honours industry stalwarts within the deciduous fruit sector who have exhibited exceptional leadership qualities over a sustained period.

“Pieter is widely recognised as a visionary and strategic thinker, with the capability to develop large businesses into success stories,” remarked Anton Rabe, Hortgro’s executive director.

Rabe further noted that the agricultural sector often fails to give due credit to individuals who have dedicated themselves to the industry.

“Through these longstanding and prestigious awards, Hortgro endeavours to acknowledge excellence and selfless service within the pome and stone fruit industries. This year’s awardees add to an already impressive roster of individuals who have made their mark in agriculture,” he said.

Du Toit’s illustrious career has seen him play a pivotal role as a director across various agricultural entities. He was also a board member of the South African Apple and Pear Producers Association (SAAPPA) for a decade, serving as both vice-chairman and chairman between 1994 and 1996.

His leadership extends to serving on several boards, including Unifruco, Capespan, and an advisory committee of a prominent commercial bank.

“I am deeply humbled to accept this award, a recognition that rightfully belongs to the entire Dutoit team. Every member and partner has been instrumental in our collective achievements,” said Du Toit.

“As a leading enterprise in farming, packing, marketing, and distribution, we recognise that our workforce is the backbone of our business. We view it as our social responsibility to empower and uplift the people within the communities we operate in. These values are ingrained in our family heritage, with fourth and fifth generation Dutoit family members actively contributing to our day-to-day operations.”

Dutoit Agri’s remarkable growth and innovation

Du Toit’s leadership has been instrumental in achieving several milestones, including the expansion of Dutoit’s reach to 42 countries, the shift in marketing from a single-channel system to a deregulated industry, the establishment of numerous cooling plants at Dutoit and other companies he has served as a director in, and the modernisation of packaging plants under his guidance.

Over the years, Du Toit has remained actively involved in the industry’s operational functions, always willing to lend his expertise and assistance in resolving critical matters.

“As an industry leader, Pieter du Toit embodies the essence of the OSH Reinecke Frontrunner Award and is a deserving recipient,” said Rabe.

This award, presented annually since 1972 to an industry leader, aims to inspire industry leaders to excel and serve as role models for other stakeholders, while also promoting the interests of the deciduous fruit industry on a national and international scale.

Du Toit was presented with the award during the Hortgro Awards ceremony held at the Lord Charles Hotel in Somerset West on Friday, 31 May 2024.

Dutoit Agri has grown from its roots in the Koue Bokkeveld in the Western Cape to encompass nearly 5 000 hectares of farmland nationwide. The company operates packhouses strategically located across the country, with a focus on the fruit and vegetable growing regions of the Eastern and Western Cape.
