George Young, the resident sommelier at Vergenoegd Löw in Stellenbosch in the Western Cape, has been honoured with the title of Best Young Sommelier of South Africa 2024. The accolade, presented by the South African Sommeliers Association (SASA), recognises his exceptional skills and dedication to the art of wine.
Originally from Hoedspruit in Limpopo, Young’s journey in the world of wine is marked by a calm demeanour and a profound commitment to sharing the joys of wine. He holds a WSET Level 3 qualification and a diploma from the Cape Wine Academy, and he is now setting his sights on the esteemed Cape Wine Master qualification.
Young credits his success to his mentors, including SASA chairman Spencer Fondaumiere and accomplished sommelier Le Roi van de Vyver. He regards this award as a significant milestone in his career, expressing gratitude for the guidance and opportunities that have shaped his expertise.
Crafting a wine experience
“I truly enjoy the sense of brother- and sisterhood we share as sommeliers in the Cape wine industry. We all learn from each other – such a privilege. I’m deeply thankful to every single person who has helped and inspired me along the way, and grateful for the opportunities that honed my skillset. That’s what got me to this point,” Young says.
His passion for wine is said to be evident in his interactions with visitors. He delights in creating memorable experiences, whether it’s spending a day with a couple at the tasting table or witnessing their excitement in discovering new wines.
Young’s colleagues praise his ability to craft exceptional experiences for guests, which complements Vergenoegd Löw’s recent revitalisation.
At Vergenoegd Löw, Young leads the Homestead Wine Lounge, situated in the restored 1717 manor house. He not only showcases his own talents but also inspires his team to pursue WSET certifications and specialist sommelier qualifications, furthering their careers in the wine industry.
“I like paying it forward,” Young explains. “I’ve experienced firsthand the power of mentorship, so it’s only natural for me to do the same. It brings me great joy.”
Among the estate’s offerings, Young highlights the Vergenoegd Löw Amalie Merlot 2022 as a personal favourite. This wine, crafted by young winemaker Vusi Dalicuba, recently won the VinLog Merlot Trophy at the 2024 Michelangelo International Wine & Spirits Awards.
Dalicuba’s 2022 vintage was his first on the farm, and Young views the wine as a prime example of the potential of South Africa’s underrated Merlot grape.
