Since incorporating Voermol Feeds into his feeding regimen, livestock farmer Thabo Dithakgwe has seen remarkable improvements in his livestock herds. These include shorter breeding seasons, better herd quality, and increased resilience in challenging conditions.

Thabo Dithakgwe, a committed farmer in the Molopo region, in North West has spent years perfecting his cattle breeding practices. Currently, he manages a herd of 158 breeding cows along with six sires. His primary goal is to achieve high fertility and uniformity among his cattle, focusing on medium-framed Bonsmara breeds that thrive in harsh conditions.

“I also look for cattle with strong hooves, good milk, and good mothering abilities,” he explains.

Since incorporating Voermol Phosphate Block into his cattle’s diet, Dithakgwe has noticed significant improvements.

“My breeding season is much shorter due to the high fertility and conception rates because of these products,” he states.

Prior to using these supplements, he often encountered a mix of sizes at auctions, which led to a less uniform herd. “The inter-calving period of my cattle has improved, and buyers prefer to purchase more uniformed cattle of good quality.”

Success is best measured in herd health

Living in a sweet veld area, this young farmer faces challenges related to phosphorus deficiencies, which he combats with Voermol products.

“I use the blocks extensively in summer to assist with these deficiencies and maintain my cows’ condition,” he explains.

This is particularly important for his Boer goats and Dorper sheep, which he also has. He uses the Voermol Phosphate Block and Voermol Protein Block with Voermol Maxiwol Concentrate as a base before lambing to ensure stronger offspring.

“I use Voermol Maxiwol Concentrate on small stock with a special mix before and after lambing,” he adds,

Dithakgwe’s introduction to Voermol products came in 2014, following a recommendation from his mentor during a farm visit. Since then, he has seen notable enhancements in his livestock’s health.

“My whole herd is in good condition, and the body score is quite well for the mating season. I’ve even observed good milk production in my heifers,” he shares.

Strong cattle, strong farm

The benefits extend beyond nutrition. Dithakgwe mentions that the dense nutrient content in the Voermol products has increased his herd’s immunity and health hence reducing his expenses on deworming, allowing his weaners to grow more efficiently. “The condition of the existing cows in production is maintained throughout the year,” he adds.

Dithakgwe has also seen improvements in the resilience of his cattle to environmental stressors.

With his farm spanning 2 500 hectares and an average of 240 hectares per camp, the high protein and molasses content in the supplements provide his cattle with high quality nutrients they need to graze effectively across the land.

“When these animals get the necessary energy, they are able to walk longer distances to graze and come back,” he explains.
