“Hibiscus rosa-sinensis thrives in KwaZulu-Natal, the Western Cape, and the Eastern Cape,” she says.

In contrast, drought-tolerant varieties like hibiscus calyphyllus and hibiscus pendunculatus are well-suited for semi-arid regions.
Mpambani advises that South African hibiscus species are generally hardy and require less maintenance than hybrids. They are more resilient to pests and diseases, need less frequent pruning, and can withstand drought conditions. For gardeners, selecting the appropriate variety and timing is crucial.
“Choosing the right time for planting allows the plant to establish itself before winter,” she explains.
