South Africa’s high-value export industries are navigating a complex landscape of challenges and opportunities, according to the latest AgriTrends report from Absa, unveiled at Nampo Cape.
With a focus on sectors like citrus, avocados, and macadamia nuts, the Spring edition sheds light on the headwinds facing these industries, from climate variability to global competition. Here are five insights from the report.
1. Avocado exports poised for growth amidst emerging competition
The 2024 avocado export season has seen favourable conditions in the European Union, largely due to a decline in Peruvian production caused by El Niño. South African exports are expected to increase by 10%, although competition from Kenya is intensifying.
The opening of new markets in China, Japan, and India could introduce South African avocados to 2.8 billion potential consumers. However, the report cautions that challenges remain, particularly regarding quality concerns linked to China’s trade protocols and the need to educate Indian consumers about avocados.
2. Macadamia nut prices surge after market rebound
Macadamia nut prices have experienced a significant uptick following the extreme price pressures of 2022 and 2023. The report notes that strong demand and a smaller-than-expected crop led to early stock depletion this season, driving up prices, particularly for kernels.

With new market opportunities emerging, especially in India, the outlook for macadamia producers is positive. The report highlights ongoing marketing initiatives by the World Macadamia Organisation (WMO) as key to sustaining this growth.
3. Citrus sector faces climatic and competitive pressures
The citrus export season has been marred by a series of climatic challenges, including heatwaves, floods, and frost, which have impacted fruit size and quality across several regions.
Despite these setbacks, the processing and juice market has thrived, buoyed by global conditions such as El Niño and citrus greening in Brazil. The report underscores the need for a diversified market strategy, particularly as South African producers face increasing competition from countries like Egypt in the EU market.
4. Table grape sector sees recovery, but challenges remain
The 2023/24 table grape season showed a marked improvement in both export volumes and prices compared to the previous season, thanks to better weather conditions and enhanced port efficiency.
However, the report warns of potential challenges ahead, including increased competition from Peru, Chile, and India, as well as risks associated with a wetter La Niña cycle. Despite these concerns, the industry remains optimistic, with producers investing in quality-enhancing practices and navigating ongoing logistical challenges.
