Celebrate excellence: Entries open for SA Dairy Championships

Entries have officially opened for the 2026 South African Dairy Championships. Agri-Expo is calling on dairy producers nationwide to participate in the 193rd edition of Africa’s oldest and largest dairy competition.

The championships continue to play a pivotal role in strengthening South Africa’s agricultural sector and broader economy by promoting quality, innovation, and competitiveness in dairy production.

Each year, the competition attracts around 1 000 entries from large, medium, and small producers across more than 100 classes. Products are judged by an independent panel of experts, with class winners earning the title of SA Champion.

Only products of exceptional standard receive the prestigious Qualité Mark of Excellence, while the highest-scoring entry overall is crowned Product of the Year.

Record growth in entries

The scale of the championships was highlighted in 2025, when a record 1 110 dairy products from 77 producers were evaluated by 103 judges representing 47 companies over three days. This resulted in 114 SA Champions and 30 Qualité-awarded products.

Agri-Expo general manager Breyton Milford said the championships remain a vital benchmark for excellence.

“The continued growth in entries confirms the value producers place on independent, credible evaluation. By rewarding quality, the competition boosts consumer confidence, supports market access, and contributes to the growth and sustainability of the dairy industry and the agricultural economy as a whole,” he said.

Dairy farming is a vital component of South Africa’s agricultural sector, contributing significantly to food security, employment, and economic growth. It supports thousands of rural jobs across production, processing, transport, and retail value chains, helping sustain rural communities.

Agri-Expo stated that the dairy industry provides affordable, high-quality protein and essential nutrients to the population, improving national nutrition. It also drives agro-processing, export earnings, and skills development.

By encouraging innovation, efficiency, and sustainable farming practices, dairy farming strengthens agricultural resilience and plays an important role in stabilising the rural economy and national food system.
