“Although biotechnology has provided significant benefits to farmers, it also has an inherent dynamic that must be actively managed and directed to ensure the sustainability of products.
“These technologies undergo a lengthy and costly journey to market, often taking 10 to 15 years and costing millions of Rands. Once their efficacy diminishes, these biotechnology traits are difficult to replace in the market, adversely affecting both the technology companies that develop them and the farmers who rely on them.”
Evolving role of agricultural stewardship
Technologies like biotech traits need careful management to remain effective. Pests and weeds can adapt if farmers overuse certain practices. Inappropriate or careless use can accelerate resistance – a phenomenon where pests or weeds evolve to withstand previously effective control measures, undermining the very technologies meant to assist farmers.
Resistance management strategies are critical. They often involve rotating crops, integrating different control methods, and following stewardship guidelines carefully laid out by researchers and seed companies. Ignoring these principles risks not just individual farm productivity, but the longevity of the entire system.
It’s a stark reminder: stewardship in 2025 isn’t just about saving soil and water anymore. It’s also about safeguarding the effectiveness of technologies that future generations of farmers will depend on.
Today’s farmers, therefore, must think of themselves as managers of an intricate balance between natural and technological resources. Their role demands not just practical skills, but a deep understanding of ecological and technological interconnections.
